Stick Onion Rings

Ingredients

Scale

For the Onion Sticks:

  • 2 large onions (white or yellow), peeled
  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1 teaspoon onion powder
  • ½ teaspoon paprika
  • ½ teaspoon salt (or to taste)
  • ¼ teaspoon black pepper
  • ¾ cup milk (dairy or plant-based)
  • 1 large egg
  • 1 cup breadcrumbs (panko or regular)
  • Vegetable oil for frying

Instructions

Prepare the Onions:

  1. Cut the Onions into Sticks: Slice the onions in half, then cut each half into ½-inch-wide strips or sticks. Separate the layers of the onion sticks and set aside.

Prepare the Breading Station:

  1. Set Up Three Bowls:
    • Bowl 1: Combine flour, garlic powder, onion powder, paprika, salt, and black pepper.
    • Bowl 2: Whisk together milk and egg until smooth.
    • Bowl 3: Add breadcrumbs.

Coat the Onion Sticks:

  1. Dredge the Onion Sticks:
    • Dip each onion stick into the flour mixture, coating it evenly.
    • Dip it into the milk-egg mixture, allowing any excess to drip off.
    • Finally, coat it with breadcrumbs, pressing gently to ensure it adheres well.
  2. Repeat for All Sticks: Place the breaded onion sticks on a plate or tray until ready to fry.

Fry the Onion Sticks:

  1. Heat the Oil: Heat about 2 inches of vegetable oil in a deep skillet or pot to 350°F (175°C).
  2. Fry in Batches: Fry the onion sticks in small batches, turning occasionally, until golden brown and crispy (about 2-3 minutes per batch).
  3. Drain and Cool: Remove the fried sticks with a slotted spoon and place them on a plate lined with paper towels to drain excess oil.

Serve:

  1. Plate and Enjoy: Serve the crispy onion sticks hot with your favorite dipping sauce.
